We now know conclusively that mental illnesses and unusual behaviour are not caused by spirits. However, belief in possession by evil spirits has not entirely died out, and a few people sometimes still take part in "exorcisms" to drive out evil spirits. Sometimes these procedures are dangerous in themselves; sometimes they merely prolong suffering by delaying proper medical attention. Whatever causes someone to consider evil spirits to be present, the best advice is to seek proper medical advice.
