To check for trouble codes:
On 1984-1996 Jeep Cherokees:
1.) Cycle the ignition about 8 times from Off to On (do not turn it to Run or Start).
2.) Press and hold the trip reset button.
3.) Watch for how many times the Check Engine light flashes. Between each number, there is a short pause. When the first code is done, there will be a long pause, and the Check Engine light will start flashing again. When the OBDII Code Check is finished, the Check Engine light will go out and stay out.
4.) Take this to your repair shop or dealer.
On 1997-2001 Jeep Cherokees:
1.) Turn the ignition to On (do not turn it to Run or Start).
2.) Press and hold the trip reset button.
3.) The speedometer gauge goes from 0 M.P.H. to 100 M.P.H., and the odometer cycles from 000,000 miles to 999,999 miles, as well as the ignition chime will sound once every time it cycles.
4.) After this is done, if there are trouble codes, the odometer will display them. Write them down.
5.) When there are no more error codes, or if there are no error codes, the odometer will display your mileage again and the speedometer turns to 0 M.P.H. . The ignition chime will sound once.
6.) Take this to your repair shop or dealer.
Hope this helps! Thanks!
