It is possible to buy a kit to 'repair' taps. These can be purchased from any good DIY shop and basically consist of a new tap valve and knob. The main body of the tap can be left where it is and the brass valve unscrewed and replaced, fitting the new knobs on top.

If you do decide to go the whole hog and replace the taps:

If your bathroom is upstairs, drain the pipes using all the taps both in the bathroom and downstairs kitchen - helps to fully drain the pipes, thus preventing any water surging back up.

There will be a metal nut securing the water pipe/flexible connector to the tap. Unscrew this first - make sure you hold on to the tap to stop it turning. To unscrew the nut you can use a spanner/plumbers grips/wrench. When you have removed that nut you can then remove the larger plastic or metal nut that holds the tap onto the bath or basin. Again, be sure to hold the tap.

When replacing the taps just do the above in reverse order. Make sure that you remeber to put a rubber or fabric washer in between the bottom of the threaded tap pipe and the water pipe/flexible connector.

unscrew it or pull off. You can tell the difference if it has a lock screw under the faucet. Pay attention to sealant. When replacing make sure the pipe is the correct length and size for your replacement faucet.

From the backside. Most showers have a closet behind them. Cut a whole through the wall and you can then replace the faucet. There are trim panels available to cover the hole so you can access it in the future if needed. There are several different sizes available, I just installed one 14 inches square which should give you enough room to work in most cases. When cutting the hole, only go through the sheetrock or plaster so you do not damage the pipes.

1. pop cover off top with sharp tool. Usually the cover is is also labeled with H or C.

2. use Phillips screw and turn screw counter clockwise util it is out.

3. jiggle handle until it comes free, sometimes this is the hardest part because they become frozen in place after years of use.

Replacing a shower faucet becomes a necessary task whenever the old faucet wears out or breaks. The key to doing it correctly is to use the right tools and purchase the correct replacement faucet. It is a mistake to assume all faucets are interchangeable. Faucets come in many sizes, types and styles and the replacement should match the original faucet size exactly.

Selecting a New Faucet

Before you replace your faucet, you need to take down measurements. Take an exact measurement of the holes for the faucet and write it down. Remove the old faucet and take it to the store with you, so you can compare sizes with other faucets.

Using the right tools helps prevent leaks after you install the faucet. Open ended wrenches and adjustable wrenches are ideal for tightening square or hex shaped nuts and adjusting other interior parts of the faucet and corresponding valves. Pipe wrenches, on the other hand, can destroy chrome finish on nuts and pipes.

If you are working in a small shower, a spud wrench can be used on the faucet. It is a thin wrench designed to fit into tight places.

Installing Your Faucet

Once you have purchased a new faucet, installation starts with removing the rear access panel at the back of the bathtub. Most tubs have a two faucet valve assembly. Pop off the valve cap, loosen the handle screw and remove the handle. Then loosen the set screw and remove the lever handle. Finally remove the cover plate.

Switch off the shutoff valves to prevent cold or hot water from running while installing the replacement. Once you turn off the water, remove, repair, or replace cartridge parts. An adjustable wrench can remove the nut locking the cartridge into the valve body. Then use locking pliers to grip the cartridge and pull it straight out.

Clean the cartridge and replace the o-ring. Flush out any excess dirt in the valve body with water. Then reinstall the various existing and replacement components and test out the new faucet. If there are no leaks, your job is done.

Label each part you remove and lay them down in order of removal on a shop towel so you can replace them in the same order later.

Usually has instructions- but if it is too complicated I recommend calling a plumber (because an inexperienced person might damage something)

Why even though the global human population's growth rate is declining the human population is growing?

An analogy might be filling a bath - you start of with the taps on full - but as the bath gets close to where you want, you begin to turn the taps down. The FLOW rate of water from the taps is DECLINING - but the level of the water in the bath is stillINCREASING.In short the SPEED of increase is going down - but it is still increasing nonethless.Hope the bath analogy helped.Mark
