* Through the chimney the can fly down pretty easily. * Through open windows . * Through any pipes or pipeworks * Cracs in walls
One way to keep roaches away is cockroach bait. For worst case infestations their is professional grade pesticides. But one big thing people must do is clean up any refuse or garbage on the property or in the house. Cockroaches breed in these areas, then infest homes.
lots of them live under floorboards and can get in through gaps in the walls.

Roaches hate the smell of cigarettes. This one time when I was really high and tried to pass my stoge to this little roach crawling next to me and the thing took one whiff of it and fled!

Bait them with larvae lur in voids or on ext, and determine where nest is which may be in an attic or under the bathtub, etc. and then you can dry it out if needed and bait or space treat it whichever is appropriate followed by a suitable dust depending on where.
Soda isn't going to do much. Boric acid is a traditional treatment for roaches. Just the acid, powder sugar is just going to attract ants. It may not be available where you are at, but there is a product called Combat that is very effective. Comes in a large syringe, about $6 here.

If your neighbors are nasty you will only keep them back you won't get rid of them. Keep your trash out food covered and dishes washed
