Of an individual diesel engine and an individual steam engine of the same energy output the diesel engine would be less polluting. It is far more efficient. However, there are far more diesel engines than steam engines in the world today so overall diesel engines pollute more than steam engines.
Steam heating is a legacy system left over from previous generations. It's less efficient thant modern heating systems. However it's often not economical to rip out a steam heating system and then replace it.
I'm guessing you mean high carbon to steam ratio. that gives rise to a proportionately greater volume of carbon monoxide being evolved. if there is a lot of steam and only some carbon, you normally get the more stable CO2 but with insufficient steam, the less stable CO is evolved, ALONG WITH some CO2. =]
That is a question that does not have one single answer. For instance, if the pressure of the steam is raised, less steam is needed. As pressure rises, temperature will also rise due to adiabatic work done on the steam. Also, higher temperatures are needed at higher pressures to make sure the steam does not condense. Raising the temperature of the steam at a given pressure also means that less steam is needed to provide the same amount of energy. Efficiency will also vary, depending on the turbine, and other factors, such ascondenser vacuum. In general, running a pressure around 40 - 45 PSI, it will take 20,000 - 25,000 pounds of steam per hour to generate one megawatt of electricity during that hour. This is with steam that is just above saturation (around 285°F). So, for 5 MW, you'd need around 100,000 pounds of steam an hour. The pipe size would depend on the turbine. A 55 MW turbine (common for geothermal), might have two pipes bringing steam in (one per side), both of which are around 30" in diameter. For 100,000 pounds of steam an hour, much smaller pipes would suffice. However, expanding and then compressing the steam repeatedly is something you want to avoid. Note that these figures reflect more of a geothermal application. The pressure and temperature of steam from a boiler will typically be much higher.

Humid air is lighter and less dense than dry air. Steam is water as a gas. Gaseous water is less dense than dry air.

Both steam and liquid water are made of the same substance (H2O). However, in the gaseous form (steam), the molecules are moving more quickly, and they are spread apart much farther. As such, the number of molecules per given volume (the mass per volume) is lower for steam. Mass per volume is the same thing as density.
The "best place" will vary a lot, depending on how many other players go there. The Mining Guild used to be a good place. It was more or less ruined by bots (that is, it was hard to get any mineral with all the competition); perhaps now that there are supposedly less bots, it will work again. But you may also want to try some of the other places.
