Process will vary depending on which handgun. In general-
With handgun pointed in a SAFE direction, and your finger OFF the trigger, remove the ammuntion magazine. Usually means depressing and holding themagazine release. Once you have done that- keeping gun pointed in safe direction, pull the slide to the rear. This should remove a chambered cartridge. LOOK into the chamber to be sure there is no cartridge in there.
Two other points- first, get a copy of the owner's manual. Most are available on line. If you cannot find one for YOUR gun, contact me through my message board. Second, if you do not know how to do the things I listed above, check for gun shops where you live. If you call them first, most will help you unload a firearm that you bring to them. Do not simply walk in the door with a gun in your hand.
