I would call his personal life difficult. As a child and young man his family had very little money so he had few advantages and he did not get along with his father. His wife was difficult although bright and from a connected family she probably was not much of a comfort for him. He lost one son, when he was a toddler, and another died at age 11. He was quite successful as a lawyer and that must have helped his frame of mind, but his attempts to run for public office were mostly failed until, of course he was nominated and elected president.
