The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest and most important battle in WW2. Why do I say that? Simple. Every bit of the war material that wound up being used in Europe, that was made in North America, came across the Atlanic on a ship, escorted by convoy protection ships, and the majority of those ships were part of the Royal Canadian Navy. The same applies to the men who travelled in the troop ships. No body who fought in Europe, and was from either the USA or Canada, flew to Europe. They all went by SHIP. The North Atlantic is not very forgiving, especially in winter. Tough and hard and determined, that was what you needed to be, to survive one crossing. The RCN escort ships did that for YEARS, and kept on getting better at finding and killing the U-boats. In the begining, in 1939, the RCN was a small group of 6 ships, by the end of the warm it was the third largest naval force in the world, with over 400 ships and 125,00 men. The RCN was a small ship navy, with no battleships, or crusiers. Just corvettes and destroyers, ships that could stay at sea and keep going thru the worst storms. We started out small, but finished big and tough, and were the acknowledged experts in anti-submarine warfare in 1945.
