Unlike the others in the gang, Darry had a chance to be a Soc and go to college.
He used to be popular and play football before his parents died, but their death caused him to give up all he had, including his social status and football scholarship. Darry had potential to go very far in life, unlike the others who did not do well in school and were most definitely not socs.
