1. Go to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall website.
2. Go to search
3. Type in the man's last name and hit search.
4. You'll get a whole list of names, just roll thru them until the get the name you want.
5. Once you find him, hit "personal information", then how he died will show.
In GEN Bond's case it said "enemy hostile fire, small arms."
The US military commander in Vietnam was GEN Paul Harkins until about 1964. GEN William Westmoreland until about 1968. GEN Creighton Abrams from 1968 thru 1973.
Under President Kennedy, it was GEN Paul Harkins; Under President Johnson, it was GEN William Westmoreland; Under President Nixon, it was GEN Creighton Abrams (the same Abrams, that our current M-1 Abrams tank is named after).
USA GEN Paul Harkins was the first commander in Vietnam, he had served on GEN Patton's staff during WWII. Westmoreland was the second commander replacing Harkins in '64; Westmoreland was also a WWII veteran serving with 9th ID as a COL. Westmoreland was relieved in '69 by GEN Abrams, also a WWII vet, he had served under GEN Patton also, as a Tank Battalion Commander. Vietnam was fought by WWII leaders; which explains why so much firepower was consumed searching for and trying to destroy the enemy.
