Well, Bill Gates was in college at Harvard at the time, and read an article about the first useful personal computer, the alair 8800, and how there was a contest of sorts for who could write a programming language for the system. Bill and his buddies, Paul Allen and Steve Balmer took up the challenge and Created the BASIC Computer Language. They submited it to the company, won the contest, dropped out of college, moved to New Mexico, and started the company. Eventually they Signed a Deal with IBM, Purchased QDOS from a dude in seattle, sold it to IBM and that's how they struck it rich. Windows didnt come till years down the road in 1984 when the Macintosh made its debut.
