Before the outbreak of WWII, Soviet Russia was involved in a border war with Finland. It had entered into a Non-Aggression Pact Nazi Germany which, in the event, proved to have a secret protocol. When Germany attacked Poland from the West, the USSR attacked from the East, and they divided Poland between them. Because of this, Stalin thought Russia immune from Nazi invasion, but on June 22, 1941, Germany attacked Russia. The Soviets then became de facto allies against Hitler. Britain immediately made overtures to Russia, with offers of aid. When America entered the war that December, it completed the alliance that would defeat the Nazis.
