Four knights stormed into Caterbury Cathedral where Becket was praying. At first they did not attempt to kill him although that was the end result. One of the knights struck him, cutting off the top of his head. Blood and brains went everywere and after they had literally slaughtered him his body was almost unrecognisable.

Thomas Becket was initially the Chancellor of Henry II. Henry got the Pope to make Becket the Archbishop of Canterbury, although he had never been ordained. With his new title, Becket changed in personality, challenging the king in numerous power plays. Henry is said to have utter an expression in frustration similar to 'Who will rid me of this priest?' One of Henry's knights is said to have taken a casual phrase seriously and killed Becket. Becket was made a saint by the Roman Catholic Church.

Why was Thomas becket called Thomas a becket?

Thomas Becket was not called Thomas à Becket during his own lifetime. He was called Thomas à Becket, by people who wrote about him much later, possibly in imitation of the name Thomas à Kempis, who was another medieval monk. Also Thomas Becket was commonly known as "Thomas à Becket", although this form seems not to have been contemporaneous, but a post-Reformation adornment, possibly in imitation ofThomas à Kempis.
