The Roman army used the pilum (plural Pilia). This was a heavy javelin 2 metre (6 ft. 7 in) long. It had an iron shank about 7 millimetres (0.28 in) in diameter and 60 centimetres (24 in) long with pyramidal head. The shank was joined to the wooden shaft by a socket.
The Light infantry used the verutum (plural veruta) a short javelin. Its shaft was about 1.1 meters (3 ft. 7 in.) long and the point was 13 centimetres (5 1/8 in.) long. It had either an iron shank like the pilum or a tapering metal head. The light infantry was abolished in the Marian reforms of the army of 107 BC, which had all soldiers use the same equipment.
