There was no Spartan and Persian War. There was a Persian invasion of mainland Greece in which the southern Greek city-states banded together to repel the Persian naval and land forces. Sparta was one of a couple of dozen cities involved.

Life in the Greek cities was precarious - the soil was mostly poor and people lived on the margin in their small plots of land. They did however have a rich cultural life.

They also were in a state of continuous warfare amongst each other, and broke it off for a period to fight the Persian invasion and then went back to fighting each other. They were prolific breeders, and although the on-going warfare reduced the male population, it was still to great - the small plots of land could not be divided amongst several children, so the Greek cities periodically sent out the surplus population to gain land and set themselves up in other places. Through this the Greeks colonised the Mediterranean littoral from Spain through North Africa, Sicily, Italy through to Asia Minor and the Black Sea.

Athens and Sparta were friendly before the Persian War. They naturally joined the alliance which repelled the Persian invasion. Athens post-war helped Sparta put down a serf rebellion, but then started to side with the serfs, so the Spartans sent them home. That was the split.
