President Garfield was shot by Charles J. Guiteau at 9:30 a.m. on July 2, 1881 in Washington, D.C. Guiteau shot Garfield twice with a .442 caliber Webley British Bulldog revolver, but Garfield lingered for 11 weeks, dying of blood poisoning caused by poor 19th Century medical care on September 19, 1881. Guiteau was unbalanced and believed Garfield should have awarded him an ambassadorship. He was hanged for the murder on June 30, 1882 and a long trial in which he served as his own defense. He argued that he had only shot Garfield but the doctors had killed him.
