When Russia withdrew from the Continental System, Napoleon in 1810 decided to invade Russia. He assembled a huge army in eastern Germany and Poland that numbered approximately 700,000 troops. This was the largest military operation ever created in modern times. In 1812 he led his army into Russia. His intent was a short sharp victory to crush the Russian Czar. With this in mind he carried only a three month supply of food and ordinance. Napoleon sought a decisive victory to quickly end the war, however, the Russians retreated and escaped the trap of fighting Napoleon head on.Napoleon always sought numerical superiority in troops when entering a battle. When he met the main Russian army at Borodino, the Russians outnumbered his troops.

Napoleon, however was victorious at Borodino. He lost 30,000 troops while the Russians lost 50,000.

On September 12, 1812, Napoleon entered Moscow. He tried to have Czar Alexander to negotiate a peace favorable to himself, however, Alexander was no where to be found. He held Moscow for five weeks and then decided to retreat back to eastern Europe.

By this time however, Winter had set in. Napoleon's retreat back into Europe was a disaster. His soldiers starved and froze to death in the harsh Russian Winter. Discipline broke down and his forces were harassed by Russian sneak attacks.

The invasion was not successful. He did occupy Moscow, but to no great advantage. He entered Russia with 600,000 troops. 100,000 were captured, another 400,000 died from battle, starvation and disease. This was a terrible defeat for Napoleon.
