The gatling gun didn't really see any action during the civil war. It was never consistent enough in its performance to use on the battle field, and while it may have been used in one or two skirmishes as test runs, it sat out most of the war being tweaked and fine-tuned eventually becoming the grandfather of modern automatic weapons. As an aside, Richard Gatling was able to give President Lincoln a demonstration of his new weapon.

Petersburg is the only Civil War battle I know of in which the Gatling Gun was present. General Butler purchased twelve of them for his troops./// They were also present in very small numbers on the York/James Peninsula in 1862. Longstreet mentions them in his memoir.

Was the gatling gun used in WW1?

Who was Dr. Gatling?

Dr. Richard Gatling was the inventor of the Gatling Gun which used revolving barrels to achieve a high rate of fire. The principle was revived in the 1960's and is still used today. Gatling refused to sell his gun to the Confederate Army during the Civil War, and the US Army was not interested, but after the War the US Army adopted the gun. Gatling, a medical doctor by trade, was ironically inspired to invent the Gatling Gun for humanitarian reasons, so as to make war more efficient, thus reducing the appalling casualties as a result of disease. Gatling patented numerous nonlethal inventions and improvements to existing inventions, but none as famous as the Gatling Gun.

When was the gatlin gun invented?

The original Gatling gun was a black powder field weapon, which used multiple rotating barrels turned by a hand crank, and firing loose (no links or belt) metal cartridge ammunition using a gravity feed system from a hopper. It was first used by the Union Army during the American Civil War. Unlike earlier weapons such as the mitrailleuse which had limited capacity and long reloading times, the Gatling gun was more reliable, easy to load, and had a high firing rate. Gatling guns were used by the US side during the Spanish-American War, most notably during the battle of San Juan Hill. == == It was designed by (Jordan?) Gatling and first used in 1862 and later during the Civil War. Gatling continued to improve the original model with addition of more barrels and increasing the number of rounds fired in a given time. Eventually, it could fire over 1,000 rounds a minute.
