How was the Great Wall of China built?

Early versions of the Wall were made by stamping earth and gravel between board frames. There were many walls replaced by the wall that is there now. During the Shun Dynasty, the Manchus had assistance from a sympathetic general and got through the wall, taking Beijing and establishing the Qing Dynasty. Under Qing rule, China's borders extended beyond the walls. After Mongolia was annexed into the empire, construction and repairs on the Great Wall were discontinued. But a separate wall was erected in the south to protect the Chinese from the 'southern barbarians' called the Miao.
