To stop the spread of communism.

The Cold War was a heated disagreement between the US and USSR (Russia). There was very little direct fighting during this war.

The Vietnam War was a war within the Cold War. It was between the north and south of Vietnam (divided by the 17th parallel). The north was backed by the USSR and the south, the US. It was sparked by the Vietnamese liberation movement because the north (under the president Ho Chi Minh) wanted liberation which was driven by communist influence. The US's goal was to stop the spread of communism and to spread democracy. Because the north was influenced by communist Russia, the US thought of this liberation movement as a threat to spread communism to south Vietnam.

But yes, the whole idea of the Vietnam War, along with the Cold War was to stop the spread of communism.

Both wars were fought on a LIMITED to conventional weapons only (no nukes allowed). Both wars were fought between a communist North and a free South. Both wars were supported by the Soviets/Red Chinese on the northern side. Both wars were fought against communist aggression. Both wars were part of the cold war.
