Tradition says that Peter was killed in Rome under the orders of Emperor Nero. However, this account seems to have originated with Pope Anicetus (156-166), who wished to claim association with Peter, placing his martyrdom in Rome. In fact, we do not really know how Peter died, or why.

Answer:

Peter, formally Simon, who's name was changed by Jesus and means literally "Rock". bore witness to the resurrected Jesus. After a ministry of about thirty years, travelled to Rome and met his martyrdom there in the year 64 AD during the reign of the Roman Emperor Nero. According to Origen, Peter was crucified head downwards, by his own request because he considered himself unworthy to die in the same manner as Jesus. The crucifixion took place near an ancient Egyptian obelisk in the Circus of Nero. The obelisk now stands in Saint Peter's Square and is revered as a "witness" to Peter's death. It is one of several ancient Obelisks of Rome. .

At this time period all Christians were being persecuted and notably blamed for the Great Fire of Rome. When the body was taken down it was discarded like the rest of the Christian's outside the walls of Circus of Nero. It is believed that those that buried him outside the walls placed a "red rock" to mark the grave. Some three hundred years later and the first Roman Emperor to convert to Christianity, Constantine. Constantine was told of the grave and he himself went there, discovered it and built the magnificent Old St. Peters Basilica over it in 326AD. Constantine put a huge financial strain on the Roman Empire, He was so certain of the tombs location. This Church stood till the 15th century and is now replaced with the Basilica we know of now.

Peter died because he was a Christian.

Apostle Peter was crucified upside-down on an x-shaped cross because he did not feel worthy of being crucified on a cross similar like the Lord.

Actually, Peter was crucified on an upside-down cross. His brother, Andrew, was crucified on an x-shaped cross.

We have one documented acount of the apostle Peter killing Christians. In Acts chapter 5, a certain man named Ananias sold a possession and gave only some of the proceeds to Peter, who believed that the church was entitled to all the money. Peter realised the deceit immediately and Ananias fell dead. Later, Peter told Ananias' wife she would also die, because she repeated the deceit. Of course, if these events really did occur, then Peter was guilty of calculated murder and his followers were accessories.

However, a hidden theme in Acts of the Apostles is a comparison between Peter and Paul, such that Peter always comes across as the more worthy apostle, so we will find quite a number of very similar miracles performed by both Peter and Paul, but in each case Peter's miracle was even more awe-inspiring than the miracle performed by Paul. In this case, we have the deaths of Ananias and Sapphira accomplished by Peter, while the corresponding miracle by Paul was to blind Elymas (Bar-jesus) the sorcerer, for trying to frustrate his attempts to convert Sergius Paulus, and only for a season (Acts 13:11). This obvious symmetry and comparison is just one reason modern New Testament scholars no longer regard Acts as a reliable history. As far as we know, Peter did not kill Christians.
