Only the very rich could afford to be tourists in the Elizabethan era. Travel was slow and expensive, and most people needed to work continuously in order to be able to live.

If you were from the lower classes, it was a time of hardship and misunderstandings, such as Queen Victoria's famous quote:
'If they have no bread, let them eat cake.' She, like the majorty of the aristocracy and upper classes could just not understand that there were people who could not afford what to them was a basic, everyday food.
The upper classes on the other hand were enjoying days where high tea and socialising were normality to them, where money was there and they wanted for nothing.
More children began to receive an education during the end of her reign thanks to church run organisations, but children's literature was there only to educate and not to enjoy. One of the first real enjoyable Children's Books from the Victorian era was Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carrol which caused quite a lot of controversy when it was first published.
