First off, women were afforded full and equal rights and respect, which was unheard of in ancient India. Secondly monks and nuns were expected to challenge and debate the Buddha and his teachings to ensure that they made sense and were backed by logic. Lastly, the fact that the Buddha indicated that his teachings should be put to the test and not followed blindly was a major change to most religions which typically needed to be followed by faith alone.
