How was the island of Kilauea created?

There is a chain of over 129 submerged seamounts, coral atolls, extinct volcanoes, and active volcanoes all generated by the same hotspot mantle plume as the pacific plate slowly slid over it. The Hawaiian Islands are just the most recently formed series of extinct and active volcanoes in this chain.

There is no island of Kilauea. Kilauea is one of five volcanoes that make up the island of Hawaii. The island is located over a hot spot, where extra hot material in Earth's mantle wells up from near the core. This causes some molten rock, called magma, to rise through the crust and from volcanoes. Over the course of hundreds of thousands to millions of years the cooled lava flows have build up from the ocean floor to form islands. The five volcanoes of Kohala, Mauna Kea, Hualalai, Mauna Loa, and Kilauea formed close enough to one another to coalesce into a single island.
