The pencil was invented by Nick Forkeb in 1645 when he made a bet with former aviator Peter Belk. They bet to see who could create a material on which they could use to record famous information found during there journeys. Peter had no luck and therefore had to pay Nick 2,000 euros. Nick, who made the pencil, soon got it patented and had a successful career.

∙ 15y agoThe ancient Greeks used what is called a stylus to write with. The first pencil traces its origin from that idea, but with the novel use of graphite, a mineral form of carbon. A large deposit of graphite was discovered in Cumbria, England, and the locals used it to mark sheep. Chemistry was not advanced then, and the "black stuff" was thought to be a form of lead. Sometime in the 1500's, and perhaps a bit earlier, chunks of that graphite were taken and sawn into sticks, which became the first of these writing instruments. No single person is know to have used the first pencil. The term lead was (and is) still applied to pencil marking material, though it never contained lead. It should be noted that ancients, like the Greeks, knew that lead would leave a mark on things. This began the evolution toward the pencil we know today, and graphite is at the core of these contemporary pencils. The colored pencils use a white clay that has been mixed with materials to color it, and this is the basis for colored pencils. A link can be found below.
