the US was only 13 British colonies at the beginning of the revolution. the rebels had few weapons and were not very organized. all the colonies were not joined together. they were scattered and did not act as one group which made them considerably weaker. only after Boston was cut off from the rest of the 13 colonies did the colonies wake up to what they needed to do, and that was join together against Britain. this decision to "become one" was crucial to how they won the revolution.
