There were three winter camps made on the expedition. One winter fort was Fort Mandan. The other was Fort Clatsop. Fort Clatsop was the fort made after reaching the Pacific and before beginning the journey back. I am still trying the find the other fort.
They did not want to be caught in the Rocky Mountain in winter.
In 1805, the Corps of Discovery spent the winter at Fort Clatsop before beginning their return trip to St. Louis. Fort Clatsop was located in Oregon County near what is now Astoria, Oregon.

Fort Clatsop, where Lewis and Clark spent the winter of 1805-1806, covered an area of approximately one acre. The fort consisted of two buildings, a stockade wall, and living quarters for the expedition members.
Fort Mandan. It was along the Missouri River, and they named it after the Mandan Indians

Because of the bad long winter. They had to take shelter or else they would have died from the cold if they had traveled back.
