Fort Clatsop is located near the mouth of the Columbia River in Oregon, specifically within the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park. It is situated close to the town of Astoria and near the Pacific Ocean. The fort served as the winter encampment for the Lewis and Clark Expedition from 1805 to 1806.
Fort Clatsop was built in Oregon by the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1805-1806 as their winter encampment. They chose this location near the mouth of the Columbia River to establish a base for exploring the Pacific Northwest. The fort provided shelter and protection from the harsh winter weather during their stay in the region.
They did not want to be caught in the Rocky Mountain in winter.

The winter of 1805 was spent by the Corps of Discovery at Fort Clatsop, located near present-day Astoria, Oregon. The expedition, led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, included various members such as Sacagawea, a Shoshone woman who served as an interpreter and guide. The group faced harsh weather and limited resources during their stay, which lasted from December 1805 to March 1806. This period was crucial for rest, planning, and documenting their findings before continuing their journey.
Fort Clatsop
There were three winter camps made on the expedition. One winter fort was Fort Mandan. The other was Fort Clatsop. Fort Clatsop was the fort made after reaching the Pacific and before beginning the journey back. I am still trying the find the other fort.
