It was the last encampment of the Corps of Discovery.
Three forts built by the Corps of Discovery on their journey were Fort Mandan in present-day North Dakota, Fort Clatsop near the Pacific Ocean in present-day Oregon, and Fort Rock in present-day Montana. These forts provided shelter and protection for the expedition team during their journey.
The Lewis and Clark expedition left Fort Clatsop on March 23, 1806.
Lewis and Clark's party, consisting of around 33 men, started constructing Fort Clatsop on December 10, 1805. It took them about three weeks to complete the construction, and the fort was completed by December 25, 1805.
Lewis and Clark named the fort after the Clatsop tribe, thus the name, Fort Clatsop.
The first fort built in Hispaniola was named La Navidad and was established by Christopher Columbus and his crew in 1492.

In 1805, the Corps of Discovery spent the winter at Fort Clatsop before beginning their return trip to St. Louis. Fort Clatsop was located in Oregon County near what is now Astoria, Oregon.

Fort Clatsop was the farthest west point of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. It is located on the Oregon Coast, west of Portland. The expedition's objective was to reach the Pacific Ocean.
