would be impossible without it:

-- drinking from a glass, because the water would not stay in it
-- eating from a dish, because the food would not stay on it
-- sitting in a chair
-- sleeping on a bed, without tying ourselves to it
-- playing hockey; the puck would float away
-- Basketball; the ball would not drop through the hoop
-- Baseball; once you hit it, it would just keep going and never drop
-- golf; same as baseball
-- boating; the water would not stay in the lakes and rivers
-- fishing; the sinker would not sink
-- coke machine; the money would not drop down into the slot

I just learned about this in chem11. I'll give the definition off my sheet. Specific gravity is a dimensionless unit defined as the ratio of density of a material to the density of water at a given temperature (usually at 4oC). Note that this expression is obsolete today; use the density.
