I assume you are speaking of the "Civil war" Which happened in America between the years of 1861 and 1865.

Despite the differences between the north and south, African Americans were generally paid less.

White Soldiers got around $13 a Month in Union/Confederate money.

African American Soldiers got half that, at $7 in Union.Confederate money.

As to the US Civil War: foremost, the south was slowly forced into using African Americans because their population was not as huge as the north. The North, however, also used African Americans, but they actually fought. The Southern Army's African Americans, however, were used as cooks and medics.
