The Greeks had colonized southern Italy and the island of Sicily long before the rise of Rome. According to legend, when Troy fell, the refugees, led by Aeneas, made their way to Italy and settled at Alba Longa, which h led to the later settlement of Rome. Julius Caesar claimed lineage to Aeneas, and through him, Venus.
