Prior to the rise of Judaism, and later Christianity and Islam, most (though not all) religions around the Mediterranian Sea were polytheist and taught there were multiple gods and goddesses arranged in a hierarchy of power that fought amongst each other.

Many of the countries of the Middle East are intolerant of other religions so the actual percentage of people that openly profess to be a different religion are small.
