Jefferson was states rights, rural protectionism, isolationism, afraid of large banking Adams was a centralist, proponent of large government, for a national bank, a Federalist believing in the good of the collection of states rather than of a single state
While presidents John Adams and George Washington were Federalists, who wanted a strong federal government, Thomas Jefferson was a Democratic-Republican, who felt strong government led the pathway to despotism, believed true power should lie in the states. While Adams and Washington worked with national debt, Jefferson erased the national debt with stringent fiscal policies and reducing the size of government.
Thomas Jefferson believed that Washington and Adams had acted much like royalty, and he tried to create less formal style for the presidency. He rode horseback rather than traveling in carriages. In place of formal receptions, he entertained at more intimate dinners around a circular table so that, as he said, "When brought together in society, all are perfectly equal. "Although Jefferson set a new style for the presidency, he did not overturn all of the federalist policies. Instead he sought to integrate Republican ideas into the polices that the Federalist had already put in place.
A strong believer in small government, Jefferson hoped to limit the scope of federalist power. He began paying off the federal debt , cut government spending, and did away with the hated whiskey tax. Instead of a standing army, he planned to rely on the local militia
