What happend to start Greek & Roman gods & goddesses was, the Greeks would experience alot of natural phenomenons (ex. Rain, Hail, Tornadoes, etc.) and emotions (ex. Love, Hate, Sadness, Jealousy, etc.) and needed an explination for it all. So what happend was they came up with gods & goddesses to explain all these 'happenings' to make themselves feel better. But then, The Romans came and heard about them. They learned the stories and took them out of Greece into Italy. When they retold the stories, they changed the names of all of the gods and goddesses to make them seem like they made them up. So I guess that also answers the question 'Why do Greek gods & goddesses have different names but are the gods/goddesses of the same thing?'
