Farming at that time was very labor intensive; this was before the invention of modern farm equipment such as the combine harvester, so slaves were mainly used as farm laborers. But household chores were also much more labor intensive in those days (for example, we now have furnaces which will keep a house at whatever temperature you set on your thermostat; in earlier times, someone had to chop wood and build fires in fireplaces in order to keep a house warm when the weather was cold). So household labor was also a significant use of slaves and indentured servants.
