During the transatlantic slave trade, slaves were subjected to inhumane treatment including beatings, overcrowding on ships, poor sanitation, and inadequate food and water. They were viewed as property rather than as human beings with basic rights, and often faced brutal punishments for disobedience or resistance. The conditions of the slave trade were dehumanizing and traumatic for those forced into captivity.
