The Peace of Augsburg was a treaty between Charles V and the Schmalkaldic League (a group of Lutheran princes) on 25 September 1555 in Augsburg, Germany. It was the official end of the wars between protestants and Catholics and established the "Cuius regio, eius religio, which allowed each prince in the Holy Roman Empire to choose his religion which would be for the entire state that they controlled. A period of time was allowed for non-conformists to emigrate to where their preferred religion was practiced.
The Peace of Augsburg, which was a result of the Reformation, was signed in 1555 and divided Europe into the Roman Catholic Church and the new Lutheran (Protestant) Church. Charles V (1500-1558), the Holy Roman emperor, was reluctant to concede lands to Protestantism, yet he also wished to end the religious divisions in the empire. Princes themselves had converted to Lutheranism, and they convinced Charles to allow each prince to choose between the two faiths for his own land. The Peace of Augsburg officially recognized the Lutheran Church and the right of people to worship as Protestants.

Many people assume that Protestants are called Protestant simply because they are somehow protesting against the Catholic Church. That's almost historically correct, but not completely. In 1529, The Diet of Speyer reaffirmed an earlier decision of the Diet of Worms in 1521. Both decisions banned Martin Luther's 95 Theses within the Holy Roman Empire. In 152T9, the Lutheran Princes within the Empire wrote a public Letter of Protest against this decision, and this group of Lutheran Princes became known as Protestants. In time, the term Protestant was extended from the protesting Princes to include the religious reformers, such as Luther, Calvin and Zwingli. Still later, the term Protestant came to include anyone who believes in Jesus Christ, but who does not worship within the Roman Catholic Church, or within the Eastern Orthodox Churches.
From the Encyclopedia Britannica Article Free Press:Peace of Augsburg, first permanent legal basis for the existence of Lutheranism as well as Catholicism in Germany, promulgated on September 25, 1555, by the Diet of the Holy Roman Empire assembled earlier that year at Augsburg.
There was no Charles 1 that ever ruled the Holy Roman Empire. There was a Charles the Great, King of the Franks, Charles the Bald, Charles the Fat, Charles IV of Luxembourg and Charles V that had the title but never a Charles 1.
