Moses was the chosen one to lead the Hebrews out of Egypt where they were enslaved. God took them to the promised land which was Canaan. God gave the 10 commandments to Moses on Mt. Sinai (pronounced sigh nigh) to tell the Israelites [aka Hebrews] how to live. Another name for the commandments could be The Laws of Life.

The 10 commandments are:

  1. You shall not have any other gods besides me (only honor and adore the one true God)
  2. You shall not make for yourself an idol and bow down to them or worship them
  3. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God
  4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy (go to church, relax, God asks for at least one day for him. This doesn't mean you have to devote the whole day to him but but he just wants you to pray and adore him)
  5. Honor your father and mother
  6. You shall not murder
  7. You shall not commit adultery (don't cheat on your husband or wife or don't take your neighbors husband or wife)
  8. Thou shall not steal
  9. Thou shall not bear false witness against your neighbor (don't lie to make someone else look worse than you)
  10. Thou shall not covet any of your neighbors goods (this means anything, wife, house, a book, doll, car, etc. Don't be jealous of what your neighbor has and you don't... be thankful for what you do have)

The Ten Words were first orally given at Mount Sinai by the angel of Jehovah. Moses then ascended the mountain to receive the Ten Words in written form on two stone tablets, along with other commandments and instructions. During his extended 40 day stay, the people grew restless and made a molten calf to worship. Descending the mountain, Moses saw this spectacle of idolatry and threw down the tablets that were the workmanship of God, the very tablets upon which the Ten Words had been written and shattered them. Jehovah later told Moses: "Carve out for yourself two tablets of stone like the first ones, and I must write upon the tablets the words that appeared on the first tablets, which you shattered." And so after another 40 days spent in the mountain, a duplicate copy of the Ten Words was obtained. These were kept by Moses in the ark of acacia wood.
