Slaves' lives didn't matter to anyone. An owner of a slave could do anything to them. They thought of slaves as items you buy instead of human beings. If a slave didn't work hard, their owner usually didn't treat their slave well. Some owners treated their slaves well, so they would do good work because slaves were very expensive.

Quite! disobedience, slacking or goldbricking was dealt with swiftly and harshly, the harshness accelerated for repeaters and runaways were sometimes simply murder as a warning to others Killing your slave for some minor infraction would be like a modern farmer deliberately driving his tractor off a cliff because it had a flat tire. You don't destroy an expensive piece of property that provides your livelihood. Few, if any, slaveowners were as evil as Simon Legree in Uncle Tom's Cabin. Slaves were provided with food and shelter, and rudimentary medical care. What we would consider minimum medical care today didn't even exist in the 1860s, so even wealthy people did not have good medical services. There were even laws preventing a slave owner from abandoning a slave who was disabled or too old to work.
