WW 2 started on September 1st, 1939. It started by Germany's invasion of Poland. Since England and France had guaranteed Polish independence, this meant that they now declared war on Germany. Hitler had fully expected the former WW 1 Allies to condone the invasion as they had condoned his other annexations of territories like the Rhineland, Sudetenland and Austria. Basically Hitler's argument in these cases always had been that these territories once had been part of the pre-WW 1 German Empire, or that they themselves once had expressed the desire to become part of Germany, as in the case of Austria.
In the case of Poland also the argument was that big parts of Poland had been parts of pre-WW 1 Germany, and Hitler was taken by surprise by the Allies' reaction in the case of Poland. Since neither party was really fully prepared for immediate action, it took another 8 months - until May 1940 - before the war in the West took off.
