Because the St Lawrence river, the St Lawrence seaway as it is known, is wide & deep enough for ships to navigate the waterway.
Initially, French explorers found the St. Lawrence river and claimed Canada for France. They developed a territory known as New France in the new country. Samual de Champlain explored and with Jesuit missionaries settled the present St. Lawrence River valley. The Jesuits were attempting to Christianize the Native tribes in and around the Maritimes and Quebec. French traders were always cognisant to get permission from local Native tribes before setting up trading posts and for that and other reasons were allowed to spread their trading circles quite wide. Many French peasants came over to New France with a promise of land. As a result, modern Quebec is a result of French colonization.
