If your current PS is running fine, there might be a couple of advantages to upgrading.

1. The PS itself might run cooler as it won't be working as hard to produce the needed power. A new unit will also be free from the dust that accumulates over time, which also makes it run cooler.

2. A higher output PS may be needed if you want to add more hard or optical drives to your machine or if you generally have multiple USB devices connected to it. Or if you install multiple SLi video cards, which are power hogs.

The disadvantage is that, if you add a bunch of devices to your computer, they will all produce heat and if the PS must produce near its maximum output all the time, IT will produce more heat too. And heat kills integrated circuit chips (CPUs, memory, etc.) If you upgrade in this fashion, you will also want to improve your computer's cooling system if at all possible.
