This is a very important question. Everyone should have some perspective on their value in the work that they do. We spend more waking hours working than doing anything else. Knowing that you do good work is essential to feeling good about yourself. (If you're doing work you don't feel good about; look for another job. There is something out there for you: something you can do that will enable you to genuinely contribute to your society.)
As for actual yardsticks of success, the most common one is the feedback that you get from your employer, customers, or clients. Do they appreciate what you do for them? If they're not telling you, it's OK to ask. A manager will like to hear you asking whether you are doing good work, since that's very close to asking how you can do better work.
You do need to be thick skinned. Ultimately, self-esteem comes from the inside. Other people won't always tell you you are doing good work. Sometimes it's easier for people to criticize you than compliment you.
Think carefully about the work you do. What does it produce? What do you contribute? Be proud of it.
