John would always travel by horseback. He didn't like the fancy offerings of the Massachusetts State Delegate to drive him to Philadelphia to the Continental Congress by way of horse and elaborate buggy (even though Samuel Adams, Johns cousin and leader of the Son's of Liberty rode in this buggy). He always rode with his companion and secretary at the time, who's name I can't recall at the time. His secretary would also deliver goods and messages back and forth from John to Abigail. This correspondence was very important not only to John but to the Congress because John and everyone that knew him said that Abigail was John's most revered advisor. He always rode hard and fast, covering long distances and harsh terrain in record times, stopping for nothing. Although, John adamantly refused to travel on the sabbath (Sunday); he was very religious, his father was a deacon and he would have been a minister if he hadn't have seen the way ministers were to always qualify their opinions and thoughts, which John very seldom did. He sailed to France, during the Revolutionary War, to help Benjamin Franklin negotiate a treaty with France. He made the ten week trek across the Atlantic in five.

Yes, they were husband and wife. John and Abigail Adams were married on October 25th, 1764; they had a son John Quincy Adams. By all accounts, John and Abigail had a very close and loving relationship, in which they wrote more than a thousand letters to each other (John's work as a diplomat and then as president required him to travel for extended periods of time).
