Dictionaries define naturalists as:

1. Experts in (or students of) natural history, or (2), people who practice naturalism in art or literature.

Presumably, just as the general population, and scientists among them, include believers in God as well as non-believers, so also naturalists would not all fit into any one category, though perhaps a majority would identify as non-believers.

Note that both atheists and religious people espouse a wide variety of views concerning God, so it is impossible to generalize.

What makes To Build a Fire a Naturalist story?

"To Build a Fire" is a Naturalist story because it depicts a deterministic view of nature where the man's fate is ultimately determined by his environment. The story emphasizes the indifference of nature to human existence and the powerlessness of the protagonist in the face of natural forces. Additionally, detailed descriptions of the harsh Yukon setting and the harsh consequences of the man's mistakes contribute to the Naturalist elements of the story.
