That depends on the type of ecosystem. There are two answers to this question based on two conflicting and opposite theories that ecologists have developed. Neither is right or wrong; one may be true in one ecosystem, but not in another.

Individualistic hypothesis:

The structure of a community is dependent on abiotic factors only; species are independent of other species and are only in a geographical location due to nutrients, temperature, etc. The extinction of another species will not affect others.

Interactive hypothesis:

Members of a community are dependent on each other and are closely linked. Biotic interactions cause the community to work as a whole with each species doing their part. If one species were to be removed, the other species would be greatly affected.

What is the specialized area within a habitat an animal or plant can live?

It is called an ecosystem. ----

The Natural plant life of a region is called?

A geographic area that plant and animal life and the natural process that sustains them live is called an ecosystem. An ecosystem must have the conditions right for survival of inhabitants.

What is the difference between a habitat and a ecosystem?

A habitat is the place where a plant or animal lives and an ecosystem is the interaction between all living species in an area and includes the abiotic factors (light, temperature, soil fertility etc.).

How is an ecosystem affected by soil?

It is an integral part of the water cycle, the carbon cycle and the nitrogen cycle. It is the medium for plant growth, which is the basis for all food energy in an ecosystem (with the exception of some ecosystems that are dependent on chemotrophs). Fertile soils mean abundant plant growth, provided the climate is hospitable, which means abundant animal life is also possible due to food and habitat availability.

What is the geographic term for a plant and animal community covering a large land area?

community...or if u inlude the abiotic factors(nonliving parts) of the enviroment then its an ecosystem or a habitat.

Why is it important to maintain a healthy ecosystem?

This is important to be able to create the balance in the habitat. To maintain the healthof the ecosystem will allow for a healthy balance between plant, animals and man. This is a cycle that should be maintained.

Who or what is affected by the extinction of species?

Generally, when a species goes extinct, other species suffer. If it is a prey animal, its predators have less food, and therefor suffer. If it is a pollinator, any plants that it pollinates will suffer (if it is the sole pollinator of a plant, that plant will go extinct). Also, if the extinct species controls the population of another species, the other species will multiply out of control, and possibly severely damage the local ecosystem.

What does biotic community or "biota" mean?

Biota means all biotic factors of the ecosystem including animal and plant life of a particular region, habitat, or geological period.

How would the plant and animal population be affected?

If by people, then the animals might be hunted or lose their habitat. Loss of habitat causes include deforestation and forest fires. For plants, they might be demanded too much.

How does habitat fit into an ecosystem?

It is another word for local . It is like a house to us. Mostly is for plants and animals. Means where something lives and it`s environment. A natural home or environment for an animal or a plant.

What would happen to an ecosystem is decomposers did not?

If all the decomposers were to die, there would be no organic nutrients and all the dead plants would ruin the animals' habitat; the ecosystem would be filled with plant and animal waste, and there would be no decomposition of waste material.
