If you have Original Medicare only, then you would provide your doctor with a copy of your Original Medicare card so that he/she has the correct information to bill Medicare.

If you enroll in a Medicare Advantage with a private insurance company, they will issue you an ID card indicating the name of your plan and your ID number. You would no longer show your Original Medicare card to your doctor, but instead show him your Medicare Advantage ID Card. Medicare would have assigned the right to administer your benefits over to the private company and they would no longer process claims they might receive from your doctor. Your new ID card will provide information on where to bill for services rendered. Keep in mind that most Medicare Advantage Plans require you to use network doctors so you should make sure your doctor is within the network your looking to join before you enroll. Otherwise you would most likely be responsible for the entire bill.

I know Medicare covers 80% and the patient is responsible for the rest, but do they cover 80% of their fee or is that fee on the fee schedule the most they will cover. ?

Medicare covers 80% of what they feel the service should cost. If your doctor accepts Medicare, he is aware of Medicare's policies and what his reimbursement will be. You will be responsible for 20% of what Medicare did not cover.

Does Medicare part a cover surgery?

Currently they do. They pay a small fraction of what conventional insurance would pay a doctor for the same work. Under the proposed plan, the President has promised us rayioning of health care. Where the line is or the age restrictions will be we don't know. What we do know is what a doctor will receive for this surgery will be much lower and the quality of the surgery will probably diminish.

Why do you think a medical biller needs to know everything about how medicare works?

A medical biller need to know everything about how Medicare works because if a procedure or office visit is not coded and submitted according to their rules, Medicare will not pay for it. Medicare is a little more strict than other insurance providers are, but a medical biller needs to be familiar with how every insurance provider which their facility accepts works.
