How would i know when a goldfish has laid an egg?

Well, If it was me I would get a bigger tank because each goldfish that you have needs 10 gallons. So like if you had 3 goldfish you would need a 30 galloon fish tank. If you don't want them to die then you might want to get like a 100 galloon tank you can have a lot of goldfish. You can get a fish tank at petco.

I have only heard about it before, my goldfish never laid eggs yet.

When your goldfish lay eggs, quickly put them in a separate container.

Apparently the adult goldfish may eat the eggs. The eggs are usually layed onto any aquatic plants in your aquarium, and if you don't have one, I suggest that you buy at least one to let the mother lay the eggs onto the plant. Be careful, the eggs are apparently very sticky!

To check if your goldfish has laid any eggs, you must first locate the nest. If you have plants or large rocks in your aquarium, look carefully in the leaves or near the base of the rocks. If you see a small tightly woven object decorated with shiny objects the fish have collected, bingo, you've found it. Now to see if any eggs have been laid, it's best to take a flashlight and shine it directly at the nest. The eggs are iridescent, and should reflect the light back at you, and if they are close to hatching, you should see the outline of a small fish, and the small beat of it's tiny heart within.

Goldfish usually lay 3-4 eggs slightly before the moon is full, but some can lay up to 6 at a time. Remember not to disturb the eggs, as the goldfish will become defensive of it's young an aggressively attack your hand if it comes near the nest.

Goldfish will gestate within the egg for up to 3-4 months, then slowly cut it's way out using a dagger-like appendage that will protrude from the center of it's head. Soon after hatching, the baby goldfish will molt, shedding the sharp protrusion, and becoming more colorful. The mother goldfish will nurse for up to 2 months afterwords, though many fish breeders remove the baby goldfish before that time. To assist in the nursing process, feed the goldfish foods that are high in vitamin C such as orange slices, and leaves of lettuce.

It will not lay eggs by itself so don't worry about it.

You need to keep them safe and warm but not to hot and check on them every 5 minutes or so. Keep them in water and let them stay with the mum/dad.
