A normal respiration is good, unlabored ventilation, sometimes known as resting heart rate. During normal respiration, rateneural output to respiratory muscles is highly regular, with rhythmic bursts of activity during inspiration only to the diaphragm and external intercostal muscles.

A normal respiration rate reported in a healthy adult at rest is usually given as 12-18 breaths per minute. It is termed eupnea.
